SUMMARY:"This is America" Artist Talk - Marielena Ferrer
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Jaime Ransome and presented by the Woodstock School of Art (WSA)\, this four-part series takes place in the fall and winter of 2025–2026 in the WSA gallery. Each conversation centers on a Hudson Valley–based artist whose practice is deeply rooted in cultural and ancestral histories. Together\, their work reflects themes of migration\, identity\, belonging\, and resilience\, offering a pluralistic vision of American art as an ever-evolving form. \nThe series opens with Ransome\, whose layered collage work examines the history and future of The Great Migration both from and back to the American South\, illuminating African American histories of labor\, movement\, and spiritual continuity. Destiny Arianna\, an Afro-Indigenous artist\, creates immersive\, site-responsive installations that connect family memory with broader ancestral narratives. Carl Grauer transforms personal history into figurative paintings that turn abstract symbols into icons of queer identity and remembrance\, drawing on his own journey toward self-acceptance. Marielena Ferrer’s experimental sculptural practice—highlighted by her thesis work with poison ivy—draws a sharp\, poetic comparison between the ways humans affect the earth and how the earth\, in turn\, shapes us. Together\, these artists bring forward distinct voices and visions that\, when placed in dialogue\, reveal the complexity\, diversity\, and richness of American art today. \nFebruary 21 | 2:00 – 4:00pm

SUMMARY:CRAZY Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:BAU Gallery is pleased to present CRAZY\, an exhibition featuring the work of 31 female-identifying and non-binary artists that creates a safe space for rage\, protest\, and performance. Guest-curated by Jaime Ransome\, the exhibition will open Saturday\, January 10\, 2026\, and run through Sunday\, February 8. Together the 55 works are a vibrant celebration of creativity across media: painting\, photography\, installation\, light art\, video\, performance\, and sculpture. The exhibition confronts the centuries-old stereotype that expressive\, opinionated\, intelligent women are “crazy” by making space for authentic responses to the contemporary world and presenting those emotions as fine art. Inspired by Afropunk art movements and feminist punk music\, CRAZY showcases art that embraces maximalist self-expression as a method of personal and political advocacy. \nCurator Talk: 5:30 – 6pm\, Opening Reception: 6 – 8pm \nOpen Sat-Sun 12-6

SUMMARY:On becoming water and water: Odessa Straub
DESCRIPTION:Collar Works is pleased to announce On becoming water and water\, a solo exhibition by Odessa Straub. The exhibition includes a range of Straub’s sculptures and paintings from the past several years altered and transformed for this presentation. \nOn becoming water and water transforms Collar Works’ temporary home at the former Union Bank. Studded by draped fabric walls\, the space interchangeably evokes grand\, theatrical space and cozy\, intimate dwelling. On view is a selection of Straub’s paintings and sculptural works\, which make re-use of various textiles\, found objects\, and discarded items of clothing. For Straub\, clothing can become a form of armour in public\, a persona to guard oneself. Here\, these personas are shed: not necessarily discarded\, but reused and reanimated. Items that once served as protection now float and flutter in water-filled vessels\, evoking ocean life and newly-emerging ecologies. On becoming water and water reimagines the exhibition– normally a space of stagnancy– as a moving body of water: facilitating growth and transformation. \nJoin us for the opening Friday October 24\, from 5-8 PM! \nOctober 11- December 1\, 2025 \nOpen Hours:\nFriday: 12–5\nSaturdays: 10-4

SUMMARY:“Rhythm\, Fission\, and Folds”
DESCRIPTION:“Rhythm\, Fission\, and Folds” brings together paintings and sculptural works that explore transformation through time: how the ruffles of cloth record a shifting state of mind\, the psychological tension between notes of a song\, and how discarded materials\, stripped of their original function\, take on new identities with their own subjectivity. The title hints at urgency\, tension\, and harmony within the works—both thematically and visually. \nShowcasing both local and international artists\, the presentation includes works by Damilola Ajegbomogun\, J.C. Hopkins\, Rina Kim\, Precious Eboigbodin\, and Rebecca Stern. The exhibition will be on view from September 5 through November 5\, with an opening reception on Friday\, September 5\, at 6:00 PM. \n\n\nSeptember 5 – November 5\, 2025 \n\n\nHours:  \nFriday 11am-6pm \nSaturday noon-8pm \nSunday 11am-6pm

SUMMARY:The Arrested Image: Identity Through the Lens of Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:The Arrested Image: Identity through the Lens of Law Enforcement\, takes a close look at the portraits produced by police vision. By turning the gaze back onto how forms of law enforcement see and portray\, it poses urgent questions regarding the relationship between identity and notions of truth\, liberty\, privacy\, and justice in the face of rapidly advancing law enforcement technology. \nFrom 19th century daguerreotype mugshots to today’s biometric databases\, law enforcement techniques evolved in tandem with technologies used to represent identity. Despite the presumed objectivity of photography and its technological replacements\, asymmetries between representation and reality proliferated along the way. Through archival material and artwork by 16 contemporary artists\, The Arrested Image demonstrates the extent to which policing produces images that shape conceptions of identity and are often misshaped by the techniques that produced them.
